A little about James:
Hello, I’m James Landen.

I’m a designer who came to UX after 15+ years in eCommerce, education, and retail management—experience that taught me to listen, adapt, and advocate for people in complex systems. I eventually felt the pull to design more intentionally, with empathy at the core.

I transitioned through the Chegg Skills bootcamp, where I studied user-centered design, accessibility, and how to turn research into responsive, human-focused products. Soon after, I joined Alleva, a behavioral health EMR, as the sole UX/UI designer.

At Alleva, I led the redesign of key experiences like the client chart, dashboard, and treatment plans—while putting my hands in nearly every corner of a complex EHR system. I built a scalable Figma design system, launched integrations with OpenAI, Looker, and NuIQ, and reworked modals and dialogs to reduce clinician friction. From internal emails to onboarding flows and product-wide UI audits, it was a fast-paced, sometimes wild, but deeply rewarding education in designing for real-world healthcare needs.

With egoless enthusiasm, a passion for advocacy, and a delightfully mixed bag of creative and technical skills, I’m excited to keep growing in UX/UI alongside thoughtful, mission-driven teams.

Random James trivia:

-
I grew up in the Florida countryside with PBS as my only TV channel, which gifted me a bizarre British/Southern accent hybrid that thankfully wore off sometime around third the grade.

-
I live in Austin, TX with my partner, our dog Lucy, and a very hairless (and opinionated) cat named Gunther.

-
I once unknowingly declined a hug from Jake Gyllenhaal.
